English Idioms with TOWN

I am out of town this week; however, I still want you guys to learn helpful everyday English skills which is why you have this short (but very sweet) video teaching you English idioms with town!

As I’ve explained in the past, learning idioms (and expressions) by a theme is a great way to memorize new language. This theme can help you stay focused, and give you an easy way to practice. In honor of being out of town, I wanted to focus on the word TOWN to teach you new English expressions.

English Expressions & English Idioms with Town

out of town: away from the city that I live

EX: I am out of town this weekend.

hometown: the city that you grew up in

EX: I am visiting my homtown.

to go to town: to do something in an enthusiastic way, with a lot of excitement

EX: You went to town on your party.

to hit the town: to spend time in an area (like a city) doing some fun, entertaining things

EX: She hit the town last night, so she’s tired today.

to paint the town red: to spend time out drinking, dancing, hanging out, going to restaurants, and doing things (usually at night)

EX: I am going to pain the town red with my friends this weekend.

*Note: hit the town and paint the town red are similar expressions

  2. Where is your hometown?
  3. What’s something you always go to town on when you do it?
  4. Where do you like to go if you hit the town?
  5. When’s the last time you painted the town red? What did you do?
