How to Learn English Prepositions

A quick search on Google will tell you that there are about 150 English prepositions. Add that to the other vocabulary you need to learn, grammar you need to master, pronunciation, reading skills, listening abilities, etc… and you can begin feeling overwhelmed by it all.

But you don’t need to feel overwhelmed when it comes to learning English. In fact there are plenty of strategies to study more effectively and today we’ll review how to do that in our 60 Second Saturday lesson.

Specifically let’s talk about prepositions and how to learn (and use) them more successfully. Below is a quick lesson for you to watch, and then I recommend you keep reading below for the full English lesson.

How to Learn English Prepositions

As you reviewed in this weekend’s video, IN and ON are examples of prepositions that can be used for a few different situations. However, we focused on learning them related to TIME.

This is a great strategy for learning prepositions, categorizing them by type and studying them with a lot of context, examples, and life application.

Additionally, this video is short but has information that can be incredibly helpful with your overall fluency. Keep this in mind when you’re studying all areas of English.

Avoid trying to learn everything, because you may end up learning nothing.

What does that mean exactly? Well, by keeping your study goal (and learning outcome) specific, you are more likely to remember and understand what you’re learning. This understanding will allow you to use it more effectively and successfully in future English situations. If you overwhelm yourself with too much, you’re likely to remember…. nothing.

So your learning outcome of today’s preposition video is learning a few uses of prepositions of time:

IN: years (2018, 2006) and seasons (winter, spring, summer, fall)

I studied abroad in 2007.

I will visit Japan in 2019.

I love traveling in the summer.

It snows a lot in winter.

ON: days of the week (Tuesday, Saturday), specific days (June 12, 2013 or December 31, 2019)

I always post videos and English lessons on Saturday.

I used to go to yoga on Wednesdays.

My live lessons will return on July 18, 2017.

I got married on June 12, 2013.

Practice Makes Perfect

Practice using the prepositions below by answering the questions in the comments, with a study partner, or in your notebook:

  1. What are you doing on Tuesday?
  2. Where were you on June 12, 2013?
  3. Where will you be living in 2018?
  4. Do you like to travel in the summer or winter?

Until next time,

Happy Studying! ♥
