8 Ways to Practice and Improve Writing in English

A lot of English learners don’t realize the importance of writing in English. If you are one of these learners, you might think that you don’t need to practice writing because you only want to use English while traveling or informally with friends, for example. Many students believe that they can ignore writing if their goal is speaking. However, the truth is that writing can (and does!) help improve your overall English fluency.

When you write you have time to think about what you want to say. While writing, you are able to think, erase, make changes, etc… You have the ability to edit what you are going to say. You obviously cannot do this when you speak. Therefore, writing is an excellent way to identify the mistakes you make even when focusing and editing your English. By practicing and improving writing in English, you can you learn how to avoid these mistakes.

In today’s lesson you’re going to learn:

  • how to practice and improve writing in English with 8 tasks
  • general tips for writing
  • about resources and websites to use

Remember that even though this lesson is for the TOEFL exam, you can apply these tips to other academic essays and writing tasks, too!

3 – If you want to get your writing edited and reviewed, here are some tools that can help you out.

iTalki: find a tutor to review your writing.

Lang-8: get your text reviewed for free by reviewing other text from your native language. This is a group work, a community of multiple language users from around the world.

Grammarly.  This tool finds your mistakes and edits for you. It has more resources than the regular Microsoft editor.

4 – Start a diary or a journey.

This is a great way to practice expressing yourself. Try and white every day, focusing on different things on different days. For example, on Thursdays, you can write about how you are feeling, on Fridays, about what you going to do on the weekend (future tense), and so on.
